What Is Orthognathic Surgery?
Orthognathic surgery, or surgical orthodontics, falls under the umbrella of oral and maxillofacial surgery, which means it is concerned with the look and function of the hard and soft tissue of the mouth. This specific type of surgery is performed when an adult patient has a severely misaligned bite. The aim of orthognathic surgery is to properly align the jaw prior to the use of braces, which will move the teeth.
Orthognathic surgery can only be performed on a jaw bone that is developing. So we do not recommend this procedure for teens under 16 for females and 18 for males.
How Does Orthognathic Surgery Work?
When it’s time for your procedure, you can feel confident in the team we assemble for you. Our number one goal is your oral health, followed closely by your comfort and safety during the surgery.
Your surgery will take place in a hospital, performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Depending on your case, the surgery may last a few hours. During this time, the team will closely monitor your health and comfort as the surgeon works.
After the surgery, you will need to rest for at least two weeks to ensure that your jaw heals properly. Once healing is complete, we will reassess your orthodontic needs and develop a treatment plan to “fine tune” your bite, shift any teeth that are in incorrect positions, and adjust any spacing (gaps or crowding). You will need to wear braces for six to 12 months following your surgery and use a retained one once your braces treatment is complete.
